Metro Exodus’s Conventional Morality (Maybe?)

i hate facebook.

anyway, Metro Exodus is trash, and I’m not just saying that because it runs like a trainwreck for me thanks Epic this is really great. the previous 2 games run BUTTERY SMOOTH but for some reason i cant get consistent frames anevermindim just kidding of course, even though i can bareLY RUN IT, it’s Game of the Year easily. The Spartan Rangers are BROS, your wife is ADORABLE, your father-in-law is SALTY, and everyone and everything is great. it doesnt matter that’s not what i want to talk about.  i wanna talk about killing people.

in the previous metro games, you could kill the shit out of everyone and still get the good endings. ive covered this before i think. lemme see… here

that was because Metro2033 (and Last Light to a lesser extent) ingeniously realized that human lives dont actually matter. not really. if someone is violating your NAP, you have every right to send them from this planet.

but it did this in a really cool way, right?

take the Nazis in Black Station. you could either a) kill them all because they’d kill you, and not lose any moral standing for it or b) spare them all, listen to them from the shadows and realize they’re just people with families, etc., and receive extra moral standing.

should you get additional goodboi points? maybe not. but at least you didnt lose any for killing people who’d kill you. this is where Last Light failed (bloo hoo hooo, dont kill traitors even though they’re responsible for countless deaths 😦 ) and where it APPEARS–BECAUSE I HAVENT FULLY TESTED THE LIMITS– that Exodus both fails and succeeds.

see, Exodus turns enemy combatants into fucking mental children. EVERY AREA YOU GO TO IS FILLED WITH BRAINLETS who you’re supposed to sympathize with, even though they’d put a bullet in your head.

to the game’s credit, not every npc is hostile. plenty aren’t. but honestly, here’s what the general groups are:

bandits: feel free to kill them because even though everyone has a story, bandits dont have a story. hahaha disregard that i lied, you encounter at least one bandit who wont shoot you on sight.

cannibals: they eat people so they’re bad. im not defending cannibalism at all, but it could not have been any fucking lamer how they were handled. they’re just pure dang nasty evil, they kidnapped Anna, who is the best and most precious waifu and needs to be PROTECCTED AT ALL COSTS AND IM NOT BEING IRONIC SHE’S PERFECT AND ID GENOCIDE ANYONE FOR HER ESPECIALLY SOME SAVAGECANNIBALS

stupid religious primitivist people who worship a stupid mutant fish: teehee, look how dumb religion is! these silly people think technology is EVIL, can you believe that? dont you just want to not kill them, even though they’d kill you? why, they’re basically children!

stupid religious slave people who worship a stupid oil baron: teehee, look how dumb religion is! these silly people think their slavers are GOOD, can you believe that? dont you just want to not kill them, even though they’d kill you? why, they’re basically children!

stupid religious forest people who worship their dead teacher: teehee, look how dumb religion is! these silly people think their teacher is watching them from beyond the grave, can you believe that? dont you just want to not kill them, even though they’d kill you? why, they’re basically children!

it sounds like the game’s really failed at humanizing people, right? think about how people actually are in real life, and then think again. Everyone is basically a fucking idiot irl.

but you still gotta kill them if they’re violating the NAP. and even though I took the GOODBOY approach and didnt kill anyone but bandits, ive heeeeeeeeeeard that killing the dumb-but-not-totally-evil people will wreck your happy ending. which is lame. BECAUSE IT SHOULDNT BE ABOUT THE PEOPLE, IT SHOULD BE ABOUT THE NAP. it doesnt matter whether the person shooting at you is good or bad, what matters is their shooting at you. now, ive gotta test it for myself because this wouldnt be the first time that people playing Metro have had no idea how the games’ morality system works, but it looks like exploration no-longer gibs dem sweet moral points. which was a big part of why i loved the first game’s system so much. it was more about understanding and less about not killing. but whatever im rambling.

ive got to test it a lot before i can conclude whether or not the ball was dropped. either way, it can’t possibly be worse than Last Light.

thanks to Epic and Deep Silver/Koch Media for ruining my experience either way.
